<br />
Now that winter is passing and day light savings is around the corner call Ms. Renee for how you can get involved in Archery club. The group decided that since Saturday mornings have gotten really busy with other activities they will meet on Wednesday March 16th and March 20th at 5p.m. at the Ag center Classroom and try shooting in the late afternoons as we go into spring.<br />

Jan 06, 2011 - <a href="http://www.cadca.org/resources/detail/parenting-style-plays-role-teen-drinking">CADCA (Community Anti-Drug Coaltions of America) article </a><br />
<br />
Researchers at Brigham Young University have found that teenagers who grow up with parents who are either too strict or too permissive tend to binge drink more than their peers. The study was published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs.<br />
<br />
"While parents didn't have much of an effect on whether their teens tried alcohol, they can have a significant impact on the more dangerous type of drinking," study author Stephen Bahr, a professor of sociology at BYU, told National Public Radio.<br />
<br />
As part of the survey of 5,000 teens, researchers asked 7th- to 12th-grade students a series of questions about their alcohol such as how frequently they binge drink, how often they communicated, in general, with their parents, and what kind of parenting style did they think their parents possessed.<br />
<br />
The teens being raised by “indulgent” parents who tend to give their children praise and warmth, but who don’t monitor bad behavior were among the biggest alcohol abusers.<br />
<br />
"They were about three times more likely to participate in heavy drinking," Bahr said.<br />
<br />
This was also true for teens whose parents were strict. <br />
<br />
"Kids in that environment tend not to internalize the values and understand why they shouldn't drink," Bahr said. They were more than twice as likely to binge drink.<br />
<br />
<b>The parenting style that led to the lowest levels of problem drinking struck a balance between both styles: accountability and support. <br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" /> <!--[if !supportLineBreakNewLine]--><br style="mso-special-character: line-break;" /> <!--[endif]--></b></span><span style="font-family: "Times New Roman","serif";"><o:p></o:p></span></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

I taught a workshop this morning on the Cloverbud Aged Children. "CLOVERBUDS; Sprouting Young Minds in the 4-H Tradition". This workshop introduced participants to the ages and stages of 5 to 7 year old development. We taught how to use experiential learning with Cloverbuds in the simple model of Do, Reflect and Apply. With 5 to 7 year olds doing simple activities, reflecting in asking things like, tell me about your picture or What did you like best about doing that XYZ? And Applying in asking, how can you do this again? at home? What would you do differently next time?. A whole host of materials and skills in dealing with children in these years was gained thru participation. Praise versus Encouragement was a highlighted topic. I could go on and on. Kate Fogarty, Youth Development Specialist was my partner in crime for teaching this workshop. <br />
<br />
Baker County is looking for a volunteer leader to work with the Cloverbud children ages 5 to 7 years old. Let me know if you are interested.<br />
<br />
This afternoon my workshop was on "What's Hoppin with Rabbits on line." I taught leaders and agents about the on line rabbit project and how to use it in their clubs to support youth involved in rabbit projects. Go to Http://florida4h.org. click on curriculum then individual projects. From there go into Rabbits and scroll down to enter the world of rabbits on line. There are wonderful teaching aids for leaders and members to learn more about the rabbit project.<br />
<br />
Jeannette Lee our Rabbit and Poultry project leader was here at Youth Development Institute for the day. The leaders received a great overview of what is available for their use and the holistic philosophy of educational experiences linked to events and activities, linked to record book reporting and then recognition to make a package of 4-H project experience.<br />
<br />
I have had a great time learning and teaching at this wonderful conference. Tomorrow is the end of our Youth Development Institute 2011 but friendships have been strengthened and leaders as well as agents re-energized to provide opportunities for youth around Florida.<br />
<br />
I am excited to think about using some of the new materials I picked up here at the conference for workshops and trainings in Baker County.Baker 4Hhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01426164760861285517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131446303518520183.post-57765576692841334942011-01-26T15:00:00.000-05:002011-01-26T15:00:05.914-05:00Youth Development Institute - Day 2 - WednesdayThis morning it was up bright and shinny for a work out at the conference center gym at 6:40a.m. Tredmill, and Eliptical. Whew, health lifestyle choices sometimes involves a little sacrifice. I wanted to stay cozy in my room but I felt better for having made the effort. <br />
<br />
The First Session I attended was "BULLYING, IT'S A PROBLEM" this session was taught by a team by Youth Development Specialist Kate Fogarty and others from the Army Partnership<br />
<br />
It was very very interesting. We looked at statistics on bullying, and learned ways to identify, increase awareness and decrease incidence of bullying.<br />
<br />
Bullying is worst in transition times. Not only transitions of the day but in over all transitional periods of development. Kids that are different in appearance, friend / social structure, sexual minority youth... all are at higher risk for being bullied. <br />
<br />
Even to the extent that as these bullies grow up they gravitate toward positions of power and authority in their careers. As adults if someone in your workplace uses words or threats to take power away from you rather than correcting the problem they might be a bully all grown up. <br />
<br />
Sometimes volunteers bully each other or youth. Children bully each other. Anything that ends up with the goal to gain power, humiliate and gain dominance are examples of bullying. These negative interactions decrease productivity, cause stress, insomnia, digestive problems, anxiety. Remember itis not about you...it is not your problem.<br />
<br />
The bully is not usually interested in solving the problem. Just gaining power. If you ask them for ideas on how to solve the problem...they won't have any ideas.<br />
<br />
Baker County 4-H has a policy of zero tolerance for Bullying Behavior. If you are being bullied, tell someone in authority...and keep telling until someone listens. Call me for ways to handle it and an intervention if necessary.<br />
<br />
Volunteers, both Counselors and Leaders can expect in-service education on Bullying this year to learn ways to identify and combat these destructive behaviors.<br />
<br />
This was a very interesting workshop and well worth the time learning about this crucial youth development subject.<br />
<br />
After that workshop I attended the curriculum fair and assembled materials that I will need tomorrow for the Rabbits on Line Workshop I am teaching.<br />
<br />
Wow, it's lunch time and where has the morning gone. This afternoon from 1 until 5 p.m. I am going to go to the workshop on "THE HOW TO'S OF TEAM BUILDING" I am really looking forward to that!<br />

Being on the life skills focus team. I came early to try to help. The committee had everything under control. The first event of the week was the retirement reception for Dr. Joy Jordan. She is been the Curriculum Development specialist for the University of Florida for the past 22 years. She has been my mentor and friend. If I had to pick one person who has been an inspiration to me it would be Joy Jordan. <br />
<br />
She actually interviewed me for my first job in extension. The interview process to be an extension agent is .... well it is a little bit about being the guest hot dog at a forth of July picnic if you get my drift. My interview schedule was on Valentines day and the first interviewer of the day didn't show up. The support staff called Joy and explained the problem and she said, "Of course, I can do that." Her I can do it attitude with only a moment's notice and continual striving for excellence are two of her life messages that have impressed me over the years. She gave me a great interview and helped me step forward into the rest of the day with a more confident attitude.<br />
<br />
From that nebulous beginning to being co-chair of her Life Skills Focus team, she has been there to support, nurture and mentor me to strive for excellence and professionalism. I don't have the words to say how much I will miss her and how much I know she deserves this time to enjoy life.<br />
<br />
Then it was off and running to the Opening Session of 2011 Youth Development Institute. Chris DeCubellis gave a rousing motivations speech to the assembled audience. We laughed, we cried. He did an awesome job of setting the tone and opening the session.<br />
<br />
Following the opening session we had the opportunity for dinner, networking and settling in to be ready for the events of the week. I found the gym and discovered that there are free fitness videos on the T.V.<br />

Last year one of our 4-H members surprised and impressed me with his talent as he played the guitar for our Share the Fun. I didn't know guitar was his hobby. I had a chance to think 'gee I wish I could play like that' (lol). He moved on to the District level of the competition. <br />
<br />
So, in this new year look for an interest that you can develop. You might have a hidden talent you didn't realize. Learning new things can bring you a lot of joy in accomplishing something. But remember learning a skill of any kind takes time and commitment. I'm sure Brad didn't learn to play the guitar as well as he does in just a couple of weeks.<br />
<br />
I later learned that Brad has also taught his brother to play the guitar. Brad Rigdon is branching out and taking his talent of guitar and teaching to the next level by guitar lessons this year. It is $50 a month for lessons that includes a 30 minute lesson each week. Call LeAnn Rigdon to set up a schedule by calling 904 - 629-8964.<br />

It sparked an investigation of all the things you can make with craft sticks, match sticks and metal pop tops. We will explore some of those topics in weeks to come. How about a craft stick project on New Years Day to have something fun to do.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>Here is the first to get your creativity on line with some of the things you can do with Craft Sticks. You know the wooden Popsicle stick things. They come in a variety of sizes from tiny to the big tongue depressor size.</div><div><br />
</div><div>How about a catapult. This idea from <a href="http://www.sciencestoreonline.com/videos.php">The Science Store On Line</a> I can see lobbing mini marshmellows with this handy thing.</div><div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRi6-AWSLvI/AAAAAAAAAX4/g7S_T--hlXQ/s1600/New_Catapult.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRi6-AWSLvI/AAAAAAAAAX4/g7S_T--hlXQ/s320/New_Catapult.jpg" width="310" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Or a Craft Stick Kazoo for a musical instrument.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="http://craftclub.com/craft/craft-stick-kazoo">The Craft Club</a> gave us this idea.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I hope you celebrate. One of the traditions is to make new year's resolutions. I don't know that I always do. But a new year rolling around makes me think of the past behind me and what is finishing or ending. Then I think of the new year coming and what could be better...what I might like to change.<br />
<br />
Two years ago I resolved to live healthier. I have lost over 60 pounds in the last two years. I went from a size 20 to a size 10 - 12. I didn't just go from point A to B there were steps and plans involved. <br />
<br />
First I had to make healthier eating choices. I had to LEARN what healthy foods where and how MUCH food I was supposed to eat to be healthy and fuel my body.<br />
<br />
Next, I had to begin an exercise program to burn calories and help my body so that I could be fit. The goal wasn't necessarily losing weight. It was to have a healthier life style. So exercise was important.<br />
<br />
Getting enough rest, dealing with stress, making and keeping medical appointments all branched out from that first goal of wanting to live healthier.<br />
<br />
So as you go into the new year think about the things in your life that you would like to be different. Break it down. Make some goals. Lets see how we do during 2011. <br />
<br />
Part of making and keeping resolutions is sharing them with others to help you be accountable. See today talking about my decisions to live healthier helps me. By sharing my goals with you, I can resist that left over Christmas cookie calling me. So, share your thoughts and resolutions with us.Baker 4Hhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01426164760861285517noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131446303518520183.post-23423981586269829312010-12-30T08:00:00.000-05:002010-12-30T08:00:09.154-05:00Traditional Model Horse Jump PropsWe've been talking about the hobby of Model Horses and I had to share these jumps that were created for the Traditional Sized (9 - 12 inch) models. Perhaps you would like to create one for your model horse. Here is a fun idea for a jump for the stable mate size. We used this for the Dash for Cash running model I have. It ends up looking like a logo jump with the gum on either side and jump poles positioned between the gum packs.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRivjPtvlpI/AAAAAAAAAXs/roBA9ehy5ZE/s1600/4745829513_9c42baa6c8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="208" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRivjPtvlpI/AAAAAAAAAXs/roBA9ehy5ZE/s320/4745829513_9c42baa6c8.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>Purchase two packages of the gum in the flat rectangle boxes they look like a slab of plywood if you are thinking in minature. I won't endorse any particular brand so the photo is just an example.<br />
<br />
On the inside--narrow side of each package glue a minature popsicle stick available from craft stores. This will form an area to attach the jump cups. Another set of the small craft sticks can be cut in half and glued across the bottom of the pack to help it stand up. Those can later be covered with the stuff you use for footing in your scene of camouflaged with plants.<br />
<br />
Craft Sticks.: <br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">"These are very similar to the larger popsicle sized sticks we've used but they're a much smaller size -- only about 2 3/4 inches long by 1/4 inch wide."</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRixo_CDAuI/AAAAAAAAAXw/lctbQlykEVQ/s1600/9150-87-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRixo_CDAuI/AAAAAAAAAXw/lctbQlykEVQ/s320/9150-87-2.jpg" width="225" /></a></div><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">This is the basis of your jump. Now you need jump poles and jump cups. The poles for Stablemate size again are easily made out of fireplace match sticks cut off and painted. Make sure an adult helps you with the cutting on these. And if you use the long fire place matches cut off the striker and dispose of them. A blog for another day is all the varieties of things you can make out of craft sticks, match sticks and other bits of recycled stuff with a bit of creativity.</span></span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">The jump cups are another matter and you will need help of an adult to do this part. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"> </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Take as many pop tops from soda cans as you need jump cups. I usually put three poles on the jump which would require six individual jump cups = six pop tabs. You only need the tab popped off the drink. Another rabbit trail to follow someday is all the wild things you can create from pop-tops. Oh MY!~</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRizmQy64fI/AAAAAAAAAX0/aOMS_JXWsY4/s1600/Soda-Pop-Tab-1280260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="250" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRizmQy64fI/AAAAAAAAAX0/aOMS_JXWsY4/s320/Soda-Pop-Tab-1280260.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">An adult will need to help you cut the bottom end of this pop tab off with wire cutters. Then bend it so that the rounded bottom part forms the jump cup and the two parts that you would see sticking up in the photo become the part that you glue around the small wooden Popsicle stick on the end of the box of gum. It makes kinda a U shape. Do you see it in your imagination? Take some time placing this where you want it as a jump cup. I believe we initially used sticky wax to attach the cups because we wanted to be able to use them in different places for different scenes. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">(((STICKY WAX: The stuff you get from the orthodontist for braces. It is the model horse hobbiests magic goo. Use it to stick down anything that shouldn't be flying away....from props to pieces of tack straps that want to flap around.))))</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Okay you are almost finished. You have your jump and the jump cups. Paint your poles white or put wide stripes around them like you saw in the real live jumps. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Now you need two straight pins or small pieces of wire and two triangles of paper that fit in scale with your jump. One read and one white. On the white one write in sharpie marker the number that you want your jump to be on course. Jump 3 for example. This gets glued to the straight pin and poked in the gum pack on the left side. The red "flag" do the same and place on the right side poked into the top of the gum pack. They form the flags on course. Red on right always and the jump number can vary put I place if on the left. Some times I make a little tent card with the jump number on it. It just depends on my jump design.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Now write up your explanation card for what is happening in this miniature scene. I make a tent card to do that. Just card stock cut like a double 3 X 5 inch card so that the front holds your description and the back keeps it propped up like an easel. Remember to use successful statements and vivid descriptions. </span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;">Now tack up and position your running horse leaving the fence. Remember to leave room that he would have landed after the jump and gained his full running stride. There you have an easy economical Stablemate sized jump that was fun to make. You'll have a lot more fun using it at your next show. I think Sabra won a class with this jump design.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #666666; font-family: Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="color: black; font-family: arial; font-size: x-small;"><br />
</span></span><br />

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Jump poles can easily be made out of fireplace match sticks for the stable mate size and regular dowels for the traditional sized model horse along with recycled bits and pieces.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Take a look at these jumps and see if you get some ideas. Share with us what you think. The general rule is bright colors and speed for jumping. You still have to jump clean without putting a pole down. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Hunters are slower, with jump colors more natural, white, wooden, greens. etc.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I tend to like the bolder, bigger, brighter Jumper Courses. Tell us what you think. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9Uv3U2cI/AAAAAAAAAWk/NxlicL0zttI/s1600/JB__0831.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="192" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9Uv3U2cI/AAAAAAAAAWk/NxlicL0zttI/s320/JB__0831.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Notice the red flag on the right side of the jump. And the jumps on course have a jump number. See the number "3"<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9U97SwkI/AAAAAAAAAWo/4kBjZ3EU7aE/s1600/51-t7EiFXjL._SL500_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="247" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9U97SwkI/AAAAAAAAAWo/4kBjZ3EU7aE/s320/51-t7EiFXjL._SL500_.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9VTnvMWI/AAAAAAAAAWs/k52eUnXAPOE/s1600/file000.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9VTnvMWI/AAAAAAAAAWs/k52eUnXAPOE/s320/file000.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Jumper jumps are often very elaborate looking.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9WNBGHnI/AAAAAAAAAWw/RqXSRXil5wQ/s1600/Horse+Show+by+the+bay+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="214" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9WNBGHnI/AAAAAAAAAWw/RqXSRXil5wQ/s320/Horse+Show+by+the+bay+.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> They can also have a logo for their sponsor.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9XV0llGI/AAAAAAAAAW0/BslxamElOAY/s1600/image01097-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO9XV0llGI/AAAAAAAAAW0/BslxamElOAY/s320/image01097-2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">They can be quite different</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO_NcfhcxI/AAAAAAAAAW4/cwJEEcXN_Z4/s1600/sc02f8d1e9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="227" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO_NcfhcxI/AAAAAAAAAW4/cwJEEcXN_Z4/s320/sc02f8d1e9.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> Sometimes the name of the show is promoted on a jump like this American Invitational one in Tampa.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO_O0MY2JI/AAAAAAAAAW8/crkGAjm2x4o/s1600/2010_invitational_jeff_welles_armani_800.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="254" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO_O0MY2JI/AAAAAAAAAW8/crkGAjm2x4o/s320/2010_invitational_jeff_welles_armani_800.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br />

</div>So you think you wish to show the jumper or hunter division with Stablemate sized horses. There are a couple of models that lend themselves to jumping easily. Because, of course, they are in a pose jumping and mounted on a clear base.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: -webkit-auto;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO3WSTdpKI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/89OpLFnhF9Q/s1600/%2521C%2521r%252C3fgCGk%257E%2524%2528KGrHqN%252C%2521lMEz%252B6WFj36BNECT7JTbw%257E%257E0_3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="228" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO3WSTdpKI/AAAAAAAAAWQ/89OpLFnhF9Q/s320/%2521C%2521r%252C3fgCGk%257E%2524%2528KGrHqN%252C%2521lMEz%252B6WFj36BNECT7JTbw%257E%257E0_3.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO3W2woKiI/AAAAAAAAAWY/ukkhGaQlEsA/s1600/140+%25282%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO3W2woKiI/AAAAAAAAAWY/ukkhGaQlEsA/s1600/140+%25282%2529.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The warmblood pose can be convincing in a jumping arena as well.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO3WgzhBKI/AAAAAAAAAWU/KhHFAnXF63k/s1600/140+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO3WgzhBKI/AAAAAAAAAWU/KhHFAnXF63k/s1600/140+%25281%2529.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div>But what shall we do with the example from yesterday. This little running horse fellow.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO1shSWVrI/AAAAAAAAAWI/e_pq_AU3msI/s1600/stablemates+2010-e.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TRO1shSWVrI/AAAAAAAAAWI/e_pq_AU3msI/s1600/stablemates+2010-e.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For similar reasons as the speed event example yesterday, you would not be successful positioning this guy running toward a jump. The thought from the judge would be that he will just flat out run through the jump. However, position him AFTER the jump and you have a whole new story and a pattern for success.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Write up your explanation card something like. "After clearing all eight fences on the jumper course this horse races for the finish line in record time." My little jumper of this model is a bay and we named him "Dash for Cash" but you never put the horse's name on the description card. You don't want the judge to recognize show horses by name.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Tomorrow how to make a stable mate sized jump prop simple and easy on a budget.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div>Baker 4Hhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01426164760861285517noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4131446303518520183.post-52780512967561849632010-12-27T08:00:00.000-05:002010-12-27T08:00:04.205-05:00Model Horse Collecting - STABLE MATE SizeThe smallest of the collectible toy horse family is the Stablemate at only 3 inches tall.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuXJAhh9I/AAAAAAAAAVo/TaGPy9EZPB8/s1600/RI1975605907.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuXJAhh9I/AAAAAAAAAVo/TaGPy9EZPB8/s1600/RI1975605907.gif" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Your entire show string could fit in a shoe box. These little fellows are hardy and durable but once broken are much harder to repair. A paperclip and apoxy with a new paint job can fix the larger traditional sized horses. Now so much with our more petite models.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Of course there is the same infinite variety as the larger cousins. Here is a lovely warmblood that could be used for jumping or dressage showing.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuXnBGmqI/AAAAAAAAAVw/SKE0u_o7vLs/s1600/140+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuXnBGmqI/AAAAAAAAAVw/SKE0u_o7vLs/s1600/140+%25281%2529.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This fellow is advertised as a sport horse.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuYE4fkVI/AAAAAAAAAV4/81nLJ4SuwHA/s1600/5707J+appaloosa+sport.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuYE4fkVI/AAAAAAAAAV4/81nLJ4SuwHA/s1600/5707J+appaloosa+sport.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Gaited horses are equally popular. this horse could be used as a Tennessee Walker or National Show Horse.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuYhRlS7I/AAAAAAAAAV8/0PDFZxoomc8/s1600/arwen1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuYhRlS7I/AAAAAAAAAV8/0PDFZxoomc8/s320/arwen1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This running horse pose can be used in any number of ways. Lets consider two show uses of this pose. First off any of the speed events or gymkhana divisions. For example, poles or barrels. It is important to remember he appears to be running flat out hard. So the strategy in showing him in those speed events might not be posing him in anything that requires bend like around a pole or barrel. If he were positioned headed toward a barrel a judge might take away points saying he wouldn't stay tight around the barrel going that fast.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So what to do with this eager fellow? </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div>"POLE BENDING. Pole bending is a timed event.<br />
(a) Each contestant will begin from a running start, and time shall begin and end as the horse’s nose crosses the line. A clearly visible starting line must be provided. An electric timer or at least two watches shall be used, with the time indicated by the electric timer or the average time of the watches used by official timers to be the official time.<br />
(b) The pole bending pattern is to be run around six poles. Each pole is to be 21 feet (6.4 meters) apart, and the first pole is to be 21 feet (6.4 meters) from the starting line. Poles shall be set on top of the ground, six feet (1.8 meters) in height, with no base more than 14 inches (35 cm) in diameter.<br />
(c) A horse may start either to the right or to the left of the first pole and then run the remainder of the pattern accordingly." <a href="http://www.polebending.org/definition.htm">Pole Bending Rules</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuXSxa8zI/AAAAAAAAAVs/BFWa5gaVbhg/s1600/stable5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9UmDJHcHhBk/TROuXSxa8zI/AAAAAAAAAVs/BFWa5gaVbhg/s320/stable5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">Position him headed for home. Each display has an explanation card with the entry to tell what the horse is doing. Write your card up saying something like: "The horse is racing for the finish line after successfully running the pole pattern in record time." </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: left;">The general style is you do not use your horse's name on the card to prevent judge recognition of show horses that have been champions before.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Easy made pole bending props for Stable Mates. In live (real) horse showing the specifications on poles is as follows: "Poles shall be shall be set on top of the ground, 6 feet in height, and mounted in bases with a 14 inch diameter. Poles shall be PVC pipe, and bases shall be rubber or plastic. For added safety, PVC caps are recommended. Preferred color for poles is natural white, but red, white, and blue rings shall be allowed. Solid rubber bases are preferred, but hollow plastic bases shall be allowed only if filled completely to emulate a solid base." Pole Bending Rules.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Take a small piece of bread dough clay and make a disk like base for your pole. Then take a long fireplace match stick, or a bamboo meat skewer or a very small dowel. Remember scale on this one. A pole too big (thick or tall) is going to look out of place. The fire place match stick is about the right thickness. Cut it off to the length you want. Take a look at this real life combination for what 6 foot height should be in relation to your 3 inch model horse.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

<div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">An informative Ebay article describes the sizes as follows. "Collectors use common terms, most coined from the Breyer company, to describe sizes of model horses. Traditional is the largest size and typically measures 8-10 inches tall. Classic is the next size down, and measures around 6 to 8 inches tall. Little Bits, Paddock Pals, and Stone Chips size is another size down; it is also called "Curio Cabinet" size, and typically measures 4 inches tall or so. "Stablemate" size comes from the Breyer company and is used to describe horse models at 3 inches tall. Candace Liddy, a famous equine sculptor and model horse creator, coined both "Bantams" (two inch tall models) and Micro Minis, models standing just one inch tall. While some horse models are larger than Traditional size, so far we haven't found anything smaller than micro mini!"</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;"><br />
</div><div style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 13px;">I am most familiar with the Traditional size 8 - 10 inches tall. The Classic Size 6 to 8 inches tall and the Stable Mate size 3" tall. In my future articles these are the sizes I will talk about the most. But no matter the size, breed, color, each model horse has something wonderful to offer the horse enthusiast.</div>Baker 4Hhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01426164760861285517noreply@blogger.com0
